Looking into a Home Business While You still Have Your Job

In this economic downturn, you might be experiencing some
mixed feelings, like finding that you're scared of losing a job
that just a few weeks ago you were wishing you could leave!

You might have been thinking about moving to a different
company while staying in the same field of work or you might
have been dreaming of making a more radical change...
like starting a home business while you still have a job.

If it's a service business that you run at home - like doing
sewing alterations or grooming pets - consider how this
would work in your house. Do you have enough space for it?
You would also have to consider the suitability of having extra
traffic to your house in a residential neighborhood.

I started a gift basket business in my home a few years ago
and I got a private mail box in a local business (such as
MailBox etc) so that I could receive supplies there and have
clients pick up the giftbaskets I wasn't delivering. That
service cost 60 to 90 dollars for six months, a little less
by the year.

A home based service business can offer you many advantages,
if you are skilled in a field that homeowners need. But, going
out on service calls can soon negate that "no commute" benefit.
Instead, you could end up spending even more time in your car.

For a few years my husband was doing home repairs and he found
that the time traveling between jobs and the time he spent
giving estimates and talking with friendly homeowners ate into
his profits...

In a tight economy there isn't much leeway for adding those
expenses to the bill!

So then there's doing business on the internet and that can be
lucrative once you get to know your way around...

A good time to start looking into a home business is while
you still have your job...

Even if you hate your job, knowing that you're building
yourself an escape route could make it more bearable because it's
easier for you to focus on your research if you know that you'll
be able to pay the rent and put food on the table...

Steve Jobs Stanford Commencement Speech 2005

Reflecting on this speech makes me realize that sometimes what
we perceive as bad news. like losing a job, might be a wake-up
call... sure the job means the security of paying the rent and
all the other bills, but if that is all it really is could this
be a good time to examine some other possibilities?

If you've been thinking about starting a business at home this
might be a good time... A good way to start figuring out what
you might choose to do is to focus on your interests...
do you enjoy sports, working on cars, or travel or maybe you
know a lot about animals, knitting, sewing, children?

It's true that what you enjoy a lot outside of work could
possibly turn out to be a business you could develop in your
home or on the internet.

More ideas and some resources coming soon.
